Chai AI is an app and website where you chat with AI characters that other users build. Chai says you can start for free. A Basic account we tested in October 2026 answered its first message with a sales pitch instead.
That gap between “free to start” and a paywall runs through the whole product. This review covers what Chai charges, what its terms say about renewals and extra fees, how its privacy policies treat your chats, and how far the age-check and safety claims hold up.
Every figure comes from Chai’s own pages, a government regulator, news coverage or our test screenshots. Chai changes offers often, so confirm the price on your own checkout screen. We last verified the pages cited here on October 30, 2026.
What Is Chai AI?
Chai AI is a social AI platform where users create, share and chat with AI characters. It suits roleplay and storytelling. It does not suit factual questions. Chai Research Corp. runs it from Palo Alto.
Chai’s FAQ says users have built more than 25 million characters. The Discover feed sorts them into categories such as Dark Romance, Horror, Cheating, Harem and RPG. Each bot stays in persona, so treat anything it says about health, law or money as fiction.
Chai runs two separate products: a mobile app and Chai Web. The FAQ says the two share no data, and that Chai Web Pro shows no ads. The app’s privacy policy says free app users see ads.
Is Chai AI Free?
Chai says yes. Its FAQ says you can chat right after signing in with Google, and that a Pro plan unlocks unlimited chats. In practice, access depends on your account and region.
Our Basic test account sent “ni” and got no story reply. The bot answered with a “further discount” for “UNLIMITED chatting” and an “Unlock New Discount” button. That is one account on one day, so treat it as an example, not a rule.
Other sources point the same way. Chai’s Safety Center says some regions require a paid subscription. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner describes Chai as a paid service with a free trial. The trial is a 24-hour Pro trial, according to the FAQ.
How Much Does Chai AI Cost?
Chai’s FAQ lists Pro at $159.99 a year or $9.99 a week, after a 24-hour trial. Two add-ons, CHAI MAX and per-use image and video charges, cost extra. Offers vary by account, so the price on your checkout screen governs.
| Item | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pro, annual | $159.99 a year (about $13.33 a month) | Chai FAQ |
| Pro, weekly | $9.99 a week | Chai FAQ |
| Pro trial | 24 hours, then converts to paid | Chai FAQ and terms |
| Images and video beyond included credits | $0.12 per image, $0.22 per video | Chai terms |
| Test account offer, October 2026 | Blaze $117.99 a year; Spark $9.99 a week | Our screenshot |
The weekly plan costs far more over time. Fifty-two weeks at $9.99 comes to $519.48, more than three times the annual price. Kept for a month, it runs about $43.
Our test screen showed $117.99 a year, not the FAQ’s $159.99. Each plan sat beside a crossed-out higher price, and a countdown timer ran above them. We could not tell why the figures differ. Older reviews list Premium at $13.99 a month and Ultra at $29.99, but those names no longer appear in Chai’s FAQ.
What Is CHAI MAX, and What Extra Charges Can You Face?
CHAI MAX is an add-on for Pro subscribers. Chai’s FAQ lists two versions: CHAI MAX Monthly at $90 a month, which doubles your rate limit, and CHAI MAX Auto at $0.66 per 1,000 tokens generated, with no rate limits.
Chai’s terms bill Auto by usage, after you use it. Each add-on counts as its own subscription, with its own price and billing period. Some older reviews list Auto at $0.33 per 1,000 tokens. Chai’s current FAQ says $0.66.
Chai does not say how many tokens a typical chat uses. For scale, 100,000 tokens would cost $66 at $0.66 per 1,000. Watch usage closely if you choose Auto.
Can You Cancel Chai AI, and Do You Get a Refund?
You can cancel online from your profile, and access continues until the paid period ends. Chai’s terms say payments are non-refundable except where law requires. Plans bought through Apple or Google must be cancelled in those stores.
The terms add several details worth knowing:
- Paid plans and add-ons renew automatically.
- A free trial or introductory price converts to the regular price unless you cancel first.
- Chai may show you a discount offer when you start cancelling, and you can decline it.
- Chai says it will email you 7 to 30 days before a price change.
- Chai says it will notify you 15 to 45 days before renewal on plans of a year or longer.
We did not test cancellation, so we cannot say how smooth it is. If you try the trial, set a reminder before the 24 hours end.
What Does Chai AI Do With Your Chats?

Chai stores your conversations and uses them, with personal identifiers removed, to improve its models. Its policies allow keeping your data for up to five years after you delete your account. You can delete the account in the app.
Chai publishes two privacy policies. The web policy was updated May 19, 2026. The app policy was updated October 12, 2026. Both state the five-year limit, with longer retention possible for legal claims or legal duties.
The app policy says deletion works from Profile, then Settings, then Delete Account. It also says Chai shares data with service providers that process it on Chai’s behalf. For users who arrive through an ad, it says Chai may share usage patterns with advertising partners.
Chai’s FAQ separately says Chai does not share personal data with third parties. Read the policy wording as the binding statement, and avoid putting personal details in chats. Chai’s own policy gives the same advice.
Does Chai AI Verify Age, and What About NSFW Content?
Chai says it is an 18+ service. Its Safety Center describes age checks by Persona, a third-party provider, using selfie age estimation or government ID verification. Chai does not say every user goes through the same check.
The Safety Center also says Apple and Google verify age in some regions before download. Our screenshots do not show whether our test account faced an age check.
On content, Chai’s sources pull in different directions. Its end user agreement bans sexually explicit images and videos. It also says users may meet adult-oriented content, including mature themes and fictional violence. The Safety Center says Chai’s models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content.
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner describes Chai as uncensored, with sexual and violent themes that can appear unprompted. Our Discover screenshot shows a character that labels itself “can be NSFW”. Creators write those labels, not Chai. Parents should not rely on the 18+ rating alone.
How Safe Is Chai AI for Emotional Conversations?

Chai scans messages for self-harm content and points users to crisis services. A 2023 case showed the limits of earlier safeguards. Treat Chai as entertainment, not emotional or mental-health support.
Chai’s Safety Center says it scans every message in real time. When it detects self-harm content, the system refuses to respond or swaps in a safer reply.
In 2023, Belgian outlet La Libre reported that a man died by suicide after weeks of chats with a Chai bot. His widow said the bot encouraged him. These are reported allegations based on her account and chat logs, not a court finding. Chai’s co-founder told Motherboard the team built a crisis feature immediately afterward.
Heavy reliance on a companion bot carries its own costs. The quiet risks of AI companionship often show up in what slowly drops out of offline life. If you’re struggling, reach out to someone you trust or a local crisis line. If you’re in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
How Does Chai AI Make Money, and Why Does It Matter to Users?
Chai reports a $120 million annualized revenue run-rate as of October 1, 2026, with 15 to 20 employees. Chai’s own page says about 60% comes from subscriptions and purchases and 40% from advertising. No audit confirms the figures.
Chai’s company page says Reuters reported $120 million in annual revenue on October 14. It adds that Chai defines the number as a run-rate, not completed-year revenue. The company also says its unit economics are profitable.
Sensor Tower, an outside analytics firm, estimates $5.08 million in net app-store revenue for September 10 to October 9. That figure excludes advertising and web subscriptions. Multiplying it by twelve gives roughly $61 million, which is our arithmetic and not a Sensor Tower forecast.
The business model explains the product. A company that earns from both subscriptions and ads has reasons to keep free access tight and upgrade prompts frequent. That’s our reading of the numbers. The business model behind it is a separate story: a closer look at how companion apps monetize emotional attachment traces how retention metrics shape the way these apps are designed.
Who Should Use Chai AI, and Who Should Skip It?
Chai suits adults who want character-driven chat and accept paywalls and upgrade prompts. It fits poorly for anyone who needs reliable free access, firm control over extra charges, or emotional support.
Use these criteria to decide:
- Try it if: you want light roleplay, you will pay after the trial, and you will check each add-on before you accept it.
- Skip it if: you need a stable free tier, you dislike renewal and usage-based billing, or you want private chats.
- Never use it for: crisis support, or any account a minor can reach.
Hosted chatbot apps rarely offer free, unlimited and unrestricted access all at once. A breakdown of free versus unlimited limits explains why that combination only holds up on local hardware. If Chai’s pricing puts you off, consider Character AI alternatives with memory and voice support, or the rebuilt, wellness-first Replika.
